Today's recipe is combined with the Coco Choco shampoo bar and I can say I'm excited about the result. As I’ve already written here, solid products are ideal because they do not take up much space, they are easy to move around and we do not need difficult ingredients to make them.
Unlike shampoos where we need to be careful about pH, solid hair conditioners do not cause such worries since what we mix is butters, oisl and waxes or emulsifiers. What I was interested in, is to get the proper hardness; I want my conditioner bar to dry nicely, to be applied gently and to be not so soft because we don't want it to melt in our hands.
Many of you, may be wondering if this product makes your hair greasy - if this is the case, then you simply apply a larger amount than you should. Solid conditioners usually have an oily base and thus a longer shelf life. They are designed to hydrate and condition our hair in the same time.
Solid Conditioner Coco Choco with Ayurvedic Tulsi Powder
recipe for 100 g | 3.5 oz
phase a:
55 g | 1.94 oz BTMS
15 g | 0.53 oz cetyl alcohol
5 g | 0.18 oz cocoa butter
5 g | 0.18 oz mango butter
4 g | 0.14 oz jojoba oil
2 g | 0.07 oz coconut oil
2 g | 0.07 oz castor oil
phase b:
2 g | 0.07 oz dimethicone
2 g | 0.07 oz oat protein
2 g | 0.07 oz d-panthenol
2 g | 0.07 oz phytokeratine
1 g | 0.04 oz vitamin E
1 g | 0.04 oz broad spectrum preservative
0.5 g | 0.02 oz BIO coconut extract
0.5 g | 0.02 oz BIO chocolate extract
2 g | 0.07 oz Tulsi powder
1 pinch cocoa powder
- Before start making the conditioner, sanitise tools, containers, work surface and wear gloves.
- In a beaker, add the ingredients of the heated phase and place in a water bath with a mild fire to fully melt. Be carefull: it’s difficult.
- In another beaker, add the cool down phase ingredients, mix thoroughly and leave aside.
- When the heated phase ingredients melt, remove the beaker from the heat and stir. Once the mixture reaches 50 degrees Celsius, add the cool down phase ingredients and stir well. Pour the mixture into a mold and wait for it to cool down and solidify. I usually put it in the fridge for an hour, and then pop it out of the mold. Leave your conditioner fully set up for 24 hours before use.
To use, simply wet the bar and run it gently over your hair. You can also apply the conditioner to your hands first and then run through your hair or add only where the conditioner is needed.
If you have fine or oily hair you can use the conditioner first and then shampoo your hair afterwards.
For an intense treatment, add the conditioner, wrap your head in a warm towel, and leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. After conditioning make sure to rinse your hair completely and finish with a cool rinse.
- BTMS is a herbal agent that comes from the natural Colza oil which softens and smoothes the hair while cetyl alcohol is also a softening factor.
- Cocoa butter penetrates deeply and moisturizes the hair by "locking" natural moisture, mango butter nourishes the hair without weighing and stimulates their elasticity while jojoba oil strengthens roots and edges. Coconut oil stimulates hair follicles and castor oil improves hair health by leaving it soft and clean.
- Ayurvedic Tulsi powder cleanses and deeply rejuvenates hair, removes dirt and toxins while soothing scalp. Helps fight dandruff and is suitable for all hair types, with a focus on oily hair.
- Cocoa powder stimulates blood circulation in the scalp and helps improve overall hair health. I purposely put a small percentage of cocoa in the recipe because it tends to leave colouring on blond hair.
- Dimethicone is used in order to give glow and soft texture to the hair. Silicone covers the "pores" of the hair so that it does not absorb excessive moisture but also maintains natural moisture inside. In this way the hair remains straight and does not "curl" so easily. At the same time it gives softness as it acts as a conditioning agent - the hair does not make “knots”.
- Oat protein moisturizes hair and gives a silky texture, while vitamin E and d-panthenol work synergistically and balance, providing smoothness to the hair.
- Phytokeratin is derived from soy and wheat proteins, binds moisture and restores vitality to hair.
- You will find organic extracts here and here.
