diy Frau Litsa cleansing balm

We have talked about soap- free cleansers in the past, here and because you asked me to, I decided to give you one more recipe. This is a cleansing method that is ideal for all skin types, even for acne prone skin.
As I mentioned in another article before, “most of the dirt which is concentrated on the skin, is oil-soluble, so it's easier to remove it with oil than with water. At the same time, our skin secretes sebum, which consists of oily texture and in this way moisturizes and retains the dirt on the surface of the skin. If soap or other surfactant cleansing products are used, we clean the skin thoroughly, leaving it without hydration. The epidermis sees this as a risk, resulting in even more sebum that clogs the pores, showing pimples and black spots on the surface.
But when oil cleansing is done properly, we maintain greasy levels at normal levels, keeping the skin clean, hydrated and healthy”.
It should be clear and understood that sebum is not a dirt, but a natural waxy substance that is produced by our own skin, in order to protect us from external contaminants, while maintaining a normal level of our internal hydration. Skin with insufficient sebum production leads to dryness and premature aging. So, using strong facial cleansers does not face the problem: you just make it worse.
Today's recipe is dedicated to strawberry because it is rich in vitamin C and fights free radicals while also helping to whiten the skin. I also added jojoba, hibiscus and avocado oils for their soft and penetrating texture as well as for their wonderful anti-aging and regenerative properties. White clay helps to remove dead cells from the skin and the sebum from the skin pores. It improves the blood circulation locally and through its antibacterial action enhances the body's ability to treat skin irritations. Unlike other clays, it does not remove moisture from the skin, making it the ideal clay for people with dry skin. It is particularly "soft" in its action and therefore fits into sensitive skin. Before proceeding with the recipe, you must sterilize the clay and the strawberry powder.

how to sterilise clays or powders before using them in your cosmetics

To sterilize your powders or clays and make sure that the material you use in your cosmetics is safe for your skin, you'll need:
  • clay or powder of your choice
  • sterilised baking tray
Pour the clay or powder into the baking tray (after you have sterilized it) and spread the material all over the surface of the tray. Place the tray in a preheated oven at 150 degrees Celsius and bake for 1.5 hours. Remove the tray from the oven and allow the clay or the powder to cool down. Put it in a sterilised container. Ensure that the clay or the powder is completely cool before closing the container.

  • Before you start making the cleanser, sanitise tools, containers, work surface and don’t forget your gloves.
  • In a beaker add the oils and the pollawax. Place it in a waterbath with low heat and remove the beaker when your mix is completely melted.
  • In another beaker, pour the clay and the powdered strawberry. Add the oils into the powdered mixture and stir thoroughly. Add the vitamin and stir again.
  • Wait for the mixture to cool down and add the preservative. Stir well and pour the balm into a jar.

If you want to do intense exfoliation, you can add seeds, as I did with strawberry seeds 👇

This balm can also be used to massage sore feet. In this case, you will replace the clay with iris powder 👇

Pollawax is my favourite emulsifier and I used it because this anhydrous product blends easily with water, which makes wash- off nice and easy.

Preservative is necessary. And it is necessary because firstly our product will be in the humid environment of the bathroom where water can fall into the jar through our wet hands and secondly, in this formula I used plant powder where it tends to spoil faster than other ingredients.

how do you use it:

Splash face and neck with water. Take a teaspoon of your product which must be at room temperature for easy application to the skin, melt it a little bit with your fingers and spread it all over the face and neck, making gentle circular massage movements.

You can leave the product on skin for about 10’ if you want to act as a face mask.

Rinse the mixture with a wet warm towel or a generous amount of water until the product is removes. Use now a dry towel.

Finish with your moisturizer but this may not be necessary.
